3 Things to Consider When Choosing a New Fence

If you are thinking about having a fence installed or built around your home, there are some things to think about first. This will help you decide everything from the type of fencing materials to go with to where it will be placed and how much you are willing to spend. Here are some important things to consider when choosing a new fence for your home.

How much privacy do you need?

A great way to decide on the type of fence to get is whether or not you need privacy. If you prefer to have privacy in your front yard and around the perimeter of your home, you can forget about metal and white picket fences. These types of fences have large gaps between the different planks and bars, so they won't provide you with much privacy. One good option for a privacy fence is one made of PVC. This is not only low-maintenance and on the lower end of the cost spectrum, but the slats are often very close together to where nobody can see in. Another option is to get a wood fence, but instead of a picket fence, get one where the wood planks are close together. Both of these fencing materials often come in different colours as well, providing you with another benefit.

Do you have time for regular maintenance?

It is also important that you consider how much cleaning and maintenance you are willing to do with your new fence. Wood is not a good option when you don't want to spend much time working on the fence. Wood needs to be sealed and cared for regularly to avoid rotting and deterioration. However, fences made of aluminium, PVC, and metal are great for low-maintenance options. They rarely need cleaning or upkeep, but still last a long time.  With aluminium, you can get it in nearly any colour you like, but you won't be able to re-paint it. This is good if you never want to paint it again to keep the look fresh, but keep in mind that you won't be able to change the colour if your style ever changes.

What are your security concerns?

If you want a fence to give your home more security, then that can also change the types of fencing materials that will be good options. For proper security, consider a fence made of strong and durable materials like wrought iron or steel. These materials are nearly impossible to penetrate and often come along with a sturdy gate that nobody can access without an electric code or key. Aluminium and wood fences are not good options for security purposes.
